Which Vermont Castings Model Do I Have?

As someone who’s worked with Vermont Castings units for years, I can tell you – identifying your stove or fireplace model is the very first step to getting the right replacement parts. And with Vermont Castings’ long history of beautiful but varied designs, it’s easy to get a little lost in the details.

Start with the data plate.
Every Vermont Castings stove or fireplace has a metal safety or data plate, usually located:

  • On the back of the unit (most common)

  • Under the ash pan or inside the door frame

  • On the side of the firebox (less common)

This plate will list the model name, serial number, and date of manufacture. Serial numbers often begin with a letter prefix (such as “J” or “V”) followed by numbers. Keep this information handy—it’s your “VIN number” for the stove world.

Match by design features.
If the plate is missing or unreadable, look closely at the stove’s physical features:

  • Door style – Is it arched or rectangular? Single or double door?

  • Top loading – Many Vermont Castings wood stoves (like the Defiant or Encore) have a griddle on top for loading wood.

  • Catalytic or non-catalytic – Check for a catalyst access panel under the griddle or at the back.

  • Leg style & trim – Some models have ornate cast legs, others a solid pedestal base.

  • Side loading door – Common on certain Resolute and Encore units.

Compare to known models.
Mountain View Hearth Products provides parts for a wide range of Vermont Castings wood stove and fireplace models, including classics like:

  • Defiant

  • Encore

  • Resolute Acclaim

  • Intrepid II

  • Vigilant

  • Aspen

  • Dutchwest series

    …and many more.

Browse our Vermont Castings gasket kits or search by model name to see if the parts match your unit’s design.

Pro tip: If you’re still unsure, snap a few well-lit photos (front, sides, and top) and compare them to manufacturer images in old Vermont Castings catalogs, or send them to us – we can help instruct you further on finding the ID plate and determining the exact model.

Correct model identification saves you time, money, and frustration. Once you’ve nailed it down, you’ll know exactly which gaskets, glass, blowers, or catalysts fit: and we’ve got them ready to ship!

  1. Hello I’m inquiring as what model or subsequent information I may need to get part for Vermont Castings stove manufacture tested September 25th 1980 Serial Number 017027

  2. My stove is a resolute 1979. Bought summer of 1979, original owner. Told there is no model or serial Number on stove. 2 years ago i cracked the lower fire back. I am looking for one or can it be welded or braised and used properly. Concerned the fire may be too hot for the repair.
    Thank you, judy

    1. Hi Judy,

Unfortunately, parts for that model are pretty limited and the firebacks are no longer available. I would suggest calling around to welding shops in your area to see if anyone can weld cast iron. If so, take the fireback to them for repair. Best of luck, let us know if you need anything else.

  3. I have a Resolute Acclaim, serial # 11871 and I am looking for the glass that goes in the door. I am not sure where to start looking, can you help?

    1. Hi Shannon,

There are a few different Resolute Acclaim models. In order to help you find the correct glass we would need the 4 digit model number. You can find this on the tag with the serial number. 0041, 0042, 0043, 0058 and 2490 are all common models. Once we have this we can link you to the correct glass. 🙂
