When to replace the refractory

When should I replace the refractory in my Vermont Castings woodstove?

The refractory assembly, or refractory package is a ceramic fiber material that is used in the Vermont Castings woodstoves. The design of the refractory varies by the stove model, in some they are rectangular and in some they are round. Some of the models use a very light weight ceramic/fiberglass material that almost feels like styrofoam. In other models it is a much heavier ceramic material that is more like cement. The purpose is the same in all of the models, the smoke and particulate from the fire are directed through the refractory and into the combustor. This design allows the Vermont Castings stoves to achieve a very high efficiency rating. It is important to make sure that the refractory is whole and in good condition.

Where is the refractory located?
The refractory is typically behind the fireback. Some models have a one piece fireback, and others have a two piece upper and lower fireback. You will need to take out the fireback to access the refractory. Check your owners manual for instructions, or contact us for instructions specific to your model.

When should I replace the refractory?
If you burn wood as your sole source of heat you should inspect your refractory annually for damage. If you are an occasional holiday or weekend wood burner you can probably get away with checking your refractory every other year. To inspect the refractory remove the upper and lower fireback from the inside of the stove. You need to visually inspect the refractory. If it is damaged, cracked, crumbling, or missing a chunk you should replace it immediately. It is in the best interest of the stove to avoid burning any wood until the refractory is replaced.
