Replacing your combustor

When should I replace my combustor?

The majority of Vermont Castings woodstoves use a catalytic combustor. This device is located in the refractory inside of the stove. A catalytic combustor causes the stove burn the smoke and particulate a second time, helping the stove to be more efficient. So, how do you know when its time to replace this? It’s pretty easy to tell, you just need to look at the combustor. If the combustor is cracked, warped, or has any of the honeycomb pieces missing you need to replace it.

Can I burn my stove without the combustor in place?
No! Burning the stove without the combustor will be incredibly inefficient. You will burn way more wood, and send all of the heat up the chimney. In addition, it is possible to over fire the stove and warp or crack the castings if you burn without your combustor. Depending on which Vermont Castings model you have, and how frequently you burn, you will need to replace the combustor every 1-6 years. When replacing your combustor be sure to inspect the refractoy package to see if it needs to be replaced too.
